Cleaning Out The Closet For A More Peaceful Mind

Posted on June 15, 2011 by admin

I don’t know how many times I have heard people saying, they wanted to clean out their closet, throw away clothes they never use, and basically keep their closet clean and ‘slim’.

Actually, I think cleaning out the closet from time to time is a good thing. I also do it, and it helps me to keep an overview. This actually made me think: why is my life in general sometimes so hectic and confusing. Why do I own that much stuff, have all these insurances, and all the things I don’t need.

So, I realized that I need to take some action. In fact, I want to clean out my life and get it slimmed down to all I need in the next 12 months. I am sure it will take the chaos away from my mind, and let me sleep better at night.

Passively Investing In Turbulent And Insecure Times

Posted on June 15, 2011 by admin

I have to be completely honest: I love watching the markets and investing parts of my capital actively, but the current turbulence is driving me crazy:

  • Greece is in the news, stocks go down,
  • According to analysts stocks are oversold, so they go up,
  • Productivity over the last month has increased, nothing happens,
  • Volcano erupts, stocks go down,
  • And the list goes on …

Currently there is so much emotion and insecurity present on the stock exchanges, that it is really hard to predict what is going to happen next. Whereas optimists claim that this is only temporary, and markets are bound to go up when certain uncertainties have been settled, others claim that this is only the beginning of a double-dip recession, or perhaps worst.

So, I decided to stop taking any new positions for the moment, at least concerning individual stocks and derivatives, and I have implemented the following action plan for the upcoming weeks or months:

The Correlation Between Finance, Health And Relationships

Posted on June 14, 2011 by admin

Looking at life as a whole, life is generally defined by three major areas: finance, health, and relationships. What ever we do, who we are, or where we are, we encounter these three areas which define every single day of ours.

Finance mainly focuses on money. It concerns career, it means business, it includes the money you earn, and the money you spend. It includes all investments, all stocks, bonds, mutual investments, retirement planning, insurance payments, debts and savings.

The Three Benefits Of Joining A Club Or Society

Posted on June 14, 2011 by admin

Nowadays, a lot of people are moving around. With increased globalization and easy of travel, it should not pose great problems to move from one city to another for work or education. I know from experience, I have done this four times already in life.

One of the greater challenges when moving to a new city is getting fully integrated. Okay, perhaps as a student it was fairly easy, but as soon as I started my career, I found it definitely more difficult to connect with my fellow co-workers; many of them have families, many simply want the best for their career, and generally the relationship I have with my co-workers is not as relaxed as during my student times.

One of the things I found extremely helpful is to join a club, or society, of some kind. And there are three basic reasons for that:

Getting to know new people

Of course, the first benefit is that you are getting to know new people. Here, I find it important that it is a true club or society, where you plan to stay for an indefinite amount of time. I have joined some groups for the purpose of, just as an example, following a language course for 6 months. But I did not find it very effective in really getting to know people.

In a club, you are getting to know people with similar interests, and you know that it is not going to ‘end’ at some point. This could be anything, from martial arts, to football or soccer, photography, sailing, aviation, or anything that interests you.

Similar interests also ensures, that you can connect much easier.

Learning and experiencing

I find clubs excellent learning experiences. Myself, I have always been interested in Japanese language and culture, and since almost a year I am practicing Japanese sword fighting (Kendo) at a club in my city.

This, for me, is a great opportunity to learn more about Japanese sword fighting and to hear and be able to speak some Japanese. Our training is once a week, and every time I am learning something new. I simply love it.

The benefit of routine

Last, members of a club will usually meet up regularly. I find this routine extremely beneficial, since you can plan the activity well ahead.

Additionally, the dynamics of the group acts as an extra motivation to show up, provided that you put energy in connecting with the other group members.

Whatever you do, you will naturally put some energy in getting to know your club members. Especially when you are joining a sporting club of some sorts, it may be tempting to go there only for the sports and the workout. But there is much more to it.

Usually, such clubs have events, they have tournaments, they have barbecue parties. All of these are extremely fun, provided that you see yourself an integral member of the club, and you are willing to give something back.

The Nonsense Of Discrimination

Posted on June 14, 2011 by admin

Have you ever given a thought about discrimination? I mean, I assume we all know the meaning of discrimination. We might think about racism, about age discrimination, or about discrimination of gender. Making these distinction for whatever reason basically comes down to favoring one thing at the cost of another.

So, perhaps we have a minority in some random country, which is being discriminated against due to their skin color, for example when it comes down to finding a job. That’s tough and not correct, especially if this minority is as well educated as the majority, and there is not reason to reject them. We all know this is bad, because this minority is being discriminated.
